Reliable wireless range extension for CoSi ISM transmitters over long distances

LoRa ISM 2

With the combination of the ISM-LoRa gateway and the LoRa alarm receiver, CoSi offers a powerful yet easy-to-use solution for the reliable wireless transmission of all types of alarms to receivers in neighbouring buildings.

At the heart of the solution is the ISM LoRa gateway, which receives the radio signals from the CoSi ISM transmitters – such as emergency transmitters – and relays them via LoRa long-range radio. The actual range depends on local conditions and can be several hundred metres, or even several kilometres with a clear line of sight, depending on the surrounding buildings.

Two variants are available as receiving units: if a LoRaWAN gateway is used, the transmitted alarms can be sent directly to the CLAS server via it. Alarms are then conveniently received, e.g. via the CLAS Caregiver App on the care staff’s smartphones.

Alternatively, the LoRa alarm receiver is available for standalone operation. In this standalone configuration, the alarm is triggered directly on the device itself. The system signals incoming alarms via an integrated loudspeaker using repeated acoustic tones until the alarm is actively acknowledged by pressing the device button. The specific alarm is then announced via a voice message and acknowledged simultaneously.

The ISM LoRa Gateway and the LoRa Alarm Receiver are mechanically identical in design and differ only in the colour of the button – black on the gateway and green on the receiver. Both devices feature an integrated loudspeaker for acoustic signalling and voice announcements, as well as a battery backup that ensures reliable operation for several hours even in the event of a power failure.

Particular emphasis is placed on simple commissioning: if the system is supplied as a pre-configured set together with the required transmitters, no setup is required. The components are already connected to one another and work immediately after unpacking. This enables quick and straightforward use without technical expertise, particularly in a domestic setting.

At the same time, the system offers extensive customisation options for more demanding applications. Via an integrated web interface, individual settings can be adjusted, live messages configured and additional transmitters integrated into the system.

The solution is ideally suited to supporting people in need of care in a domestic setting. Particularly in scenarios where relatives or neighbours live in close proximity – for example, in the same building or in the immediate neighbourhood – the system enables reliable alerting over longer distances. In an emergency, the person in need of assistance can, for example, trigger an alarm via a portable transmitter, which is reliably relayed to the carer despite the transmitter’s limited range.

Furthermore, the system opens up a wide range of applications beyond the care sector. For example, buildings can be monitored for unauthorised access or smoke, whilst technical installations can be monitored for movement and changes in status. The combination of long range, long transmitter battery life, ease of use and flexible expandability makes this solution a versatile tool for a wide variety of security and monitoring applications.

Up to three ISM LoRa gateways, each with their own transmitters, can be connected to a LoRa alarm receiver.
